Weekly Call to Action! Week of Jan. 30, 2017

There are so many Calls to Action since January 20th that my head is spinning and fatigue and confusion are of real concern. I watched a feel good movie last night simply because I desperately needed a break from the intensity. One of the premises of the story was we cannot caretake if we don’t take care of one’s self first. We are in serious caretaking mode of our Democracy, and it’s Constitution. We need to take our self-care seriously. Take at least one day a week off from the news, which likely means all of our social media addictions as well.

One of the many calls to action that I have seen includes creating a personal rapid response team within your family, friends, community. Sharing current actions with one another, cutting through the noise to determine what to do next, holding one accountable to acting and having someone see you and say ‘hey, it’s time for you to take a day off,’ can all be a part of your team’s goals.

Hopefully, by now, you have your Legislators phone numbers handy, already in your phone or close at hand for daily action.
Here is a tip (Thanks, Ashley!) for those whose voicemails are full:
Fax your Senators: https://faxzero.com/fax_senate.php
Fax your Congress Reps: https://faxzero.com/fax_congress.php
You can send up to 5 faxes a day for free (each fax can have up to 3 pages + a cover letter.)

Also, bookmark this page to follow and respond to how often your Representative and Senators vote for Trump’s agenda?
Tracking Congress In The Age Of Trump

The actions listed below are lifted from the named sources. Speak Up often and loudly. This is what Democracy looks like! (https://www.indivisibleguide.com/)

From Indivisible‘s Monday night Emergency Call:
RE: Executive Order halting all refugee admissions and barring people from many predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States.

There’s no reason that the Senate should be conducting business as usual while our basic values are under attack. Senators have powerful tools to delay and stop legislation, and they should be using them. This isn’t about speeches or nice tweets—this is about political hardball.

1. Withhold Consent. Any single Senator can ‘withhold consent’—a procedural maneuver that puts Senate business on pause for days at a time. When Senate Leadership asks for “unanimous consent” to move forward with business as usual, your Senator should say “I Object.” This will dramatically slow Trump’s other priorities from moving forward until he lifts this odious ban. #WithholdConsent

2. No Justice, No Bills. Your Senator should commit to filibustering EVERY bill that comes up in the Senate until Trump’s illegal, unconstitutional Executive Order is rescinded. By filibustering, your senator can stop all of Trump’s future legislative priorities. The ONLY bill that should be allowed to come to a vote is a bill ending the Muslim and refugee ban. #NoJusticeNoBills

RE: Executive Order regarding the elevation of Steve Bannon to the National Security Council

Here’s a script for calling/writing/faxing (adjust as necessary – see links for free faxing senators/representatives above.)

Senator NAME

Hello, I am NAME, a resident of ZIPCODE, and one of your constituents. I am very concerned about the executive order President Trump signed this last weekend elevating White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon as a permanent member of the National Security Council while minimizing the role of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Director of National Intelligence. This will, in effect, shut Gen. Joseph Dunford out of critical meetings, and it will also grant Steve Bannon unprecedented power and control over the executive branch.

This order is circumventing established law. According to section (a)(6) of federal statute 50 U.S. Code 3021, a civilian like Steve Bannon will, in fact, need to go through Senate confirmation and approval to serve on the National Security Council because he doesn’t fit into any of the five listed pre-approved categories.

First, I am asking SENATOR join with Senator John McCain in speaking out against this executive order immediately. Second, I am asking that SENATOR immediately call for a cessation of all of Steve Bannon’s activities on the National Security Council until he is approved by the Senate. And finally, I am demanding that SENATOR vote NO to approving Steve Bannon’s placement on the National Security Council.

Thank you

Hearings – Week 2

Republicans are trying to fast track the hearings of Trump’s nominations. No point explaining their excuses for shortcutting the process, why waste words on their lies. They hope to fast track appointees through even though they have not all completed the normal background checks and ethics clearances that historically happen before the Senate hearings begin. (Action 1 – Call your Republican Legislators and let them know that this is unacceptable. Hearings should not be allowed until the background checks and ethics clearances have been completed.  Call 202-224-3121. Choose Senate and enter your zip code.)  Hard to know everything you want to ask when you don’t have all the information.  The new administration seems intent on destroying every precedence and protocol, and the elected Republicans are willing to help them do so.

Actions 2, 3, 4…. Call the Committee members and voice your concerns.

Listed below you will find a link to the Committee page so that you can contact the committee members responsible for asking the hard questions of your favorite (heavy sarcasm) nominees.  Set up a call schedule for the week, read a couple articles about your nominees of choice to help you list your particular concerns before calling.  Call early enough that you can call again if the phones are jammed. Happy Resisting!

Sample Call Scripts

The Tuesday lineup:

Betsy DeVos, nominee for Education Secretary before the Senate HELP committee. Postponed from last week.

Ryan Zinke, nominee for Interior Secretary before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

Weekly Call to Action! Jan. 16, 2017

Sanders and Warren inspired many protests this weekend over the Repeal of the ACA.

[The following phone # can be put in your phone’s contacts for quick access. This is to the DC switchboard. You choose whether you wish to speak to a Senator or House Representative and enter your zip code. You are then placed into the voicemail or office for your representatives. (202) 224-3121.]

“During the 2009 debate over the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the American Journal of Public Health published a study by Harvard Medical School and Cambridge Health Alliance showing that 45,000 Americans were dying every year as a result of not having health insurance. To be clear: this was before the passage of the ACA. Broken down, that’s 3,750 deaths every month of every year — the equivalent of a new 9/11 every 30 days.” Bob Cesca

While there are many issues regarding the repeal of the ACA, three of the largest are the expansion loss for Medicaid and the loss of coverage if not able to get employer coverage, loss of coverage for those with pre-existing conditions, and the budgetary cost of repeal to the taxpayers.

Individual health insurance is bought by people who do not have jobs that will provide them with employer coverage. Many, many more folks are cobbling a living together with 2 or 3 part-time jobs. None of these jobs provide healthcare. Many, many more folks have had their FT jobs whittled down by their employers to hours below the threshold that requires employers to provide healthcare. Anyone that works as a Contractor or for themselves would have to seek individual insurance.
Folks who cannot financially afford the high premiums of individual insurance are left with no health safety net. Those are the 20 million people that will be left without health insurance without an adequate replacement.

Often, when healthy people think of pre-existing conditions they think of serious ailments. Pre-existing conditions that the insurers are allowed to exclude coverage for, on individual health plans, include being prescribed any anxiety or depression medication at any time in your life. Having a questionable pap smear even if the following pap smear proves that there was nothing wrong. Any revelation in your medical history that you have been depressed or had any ‘mental health’ issues. Essentially, the actuaries within the insurance company will not allow the company to insure you unless they can accurately identify and quantify the financial risk your health will cost the company. If there is a question, insurance was denied. Your only recourse, find a job that provides health insurance. According to the insurance providers declaration of pre-existing conditions, 1 in 2 Americans have pre-existing conditions and can be denied insurance under individual plans.

“A full repeal of Obamacare would cost $350 billion over the next decade, according to a new analysis from the bipartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. This makes its wholesale dismantling much more complicated.” – Tami Tuhby

Call your legislators, call your Republican legislators in your State and tell them you expect a safety net for all Americans currently being insured by Obamacare before they repeal what is currently in place. Tell them that their hatred of Pres. Obama is not an acceptable reason to leave 20million people without health insurance. Tell them that you expect a workable and cost effective replacement that both protects Americans and does not raise the deficit Billions more.

Weekly Call to ACTION! – Dec. 10, 2016

Draining the Swamp certainly meant something different to Trump than it did to the crowds who cheered him on at his rally’s. When looking at the pedigree’s of his cabinet picks what we see is a classic bait and switch. It appears that by ‘swamp’ Trump meant anyone that would not work for the little guy. There is not a single cabinet or administrative pick, thus far, that has not personally profited off the back of the working class. All of his picks have spent their lives looking for opportunities to line their pocketbooks and most have never stepped foot into the public sector and served the less fortunate. Some have actively hurt others to had more zeroes to their net worth.

This week call your legislators, as their constituents, to ask that they NOT confirm these unqualified and opportunistic wealth hoarders.

Steve Mnuchin for Secretary of the Treasury
Wilbur Ross for Secretary of Commerce
Linda McMahon for Administrator Of Small Business Administration

Ideally, that is three different calls to get more bang for your call. Be sure to drop by this week’s collection of relevant articles. Also, see why Calling is better than emailing your legislators .

Steve Mnuchin profited from the housing meltdown while at Goldman Sachs. Mnuchin has no experience in either Government or running a large agency. He does have experience in recognizing opportunities that hurt the middle and lower class to make a profit. Mnuchin is looking forward to ‘rolling back’ financial regulations, those regulations that protect the working poor and middle class. He also stated that he would be tasked with overhauling the tax code. In other words, making the rich richer and the poor poorer because he has never once in his career been a champion of the middle or lower class.

Wilbur Ross is all about profit. He hitched himself to Trump realizing that he could make money from Trump’s star power. Ross buys failing assets and slash and burns them into a profit. Historically, he does not care about the people that he hurts to create a personal cash infusion into his pocketbook. If you believe that Trump and Ross cared about someone other than themselves, this might be a mix that could rock some life into our economy. However, neither have ever shown that they care about anything beyond growing their personal bank accounts.

Linda McMahon was chosen not because she has public service experience, she has none, but she is a billionaire with strong experience in funding Republican candidates. She has personal ties to Trump, is his largest foundation donor and donated 6 million to his campaign. Whether our small businesses can afford to find out if she has any compassion or concern for the little guy remains to be seen. Thus far, her allegiance is with the already wealthy.

The Senate will need to confirm the following, thus far announced Cabinet posts:
Secretary of the Treasury – Steve Mnuchin
Secretary of Defense – Gen. James Mattis (Ret.)
Attorney General – Sen. Jeff Sessions
Secretary of Commerce – Wilbur Ross
Secretary of Labor – Andrew Puzder
Secretary of Health and Human Services – Rep. Tom Price
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development – Dr. Ben Carson
Secretary of Transportation – Elaine Chao
Secretary of Education – Betsy DeVos
Environmental Protection Agency Administrator – Scott Pruitt
Ambassador to the United Nations – Gov. Nikki Haley
Administrator Of Small Business Administration – Linda McMahon
Centers For Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator – Seema Verma
Central Intelligence Agency Director – Rep. Mike Pompeo

Weekly Call to ACTION! – Dec. 4, 2016

With the amount of news, pundit screaming, diversion tactics and overall overwhelm since the world ended on November 9th, it’s hard to know what to do. Which issue to take on, who to call and about what exactly.

Watching who is being chosen to surround and influence Trump is soul deflating. It’s scary to watch but watch we must. The last couple of weeks there has been an outpouring of Ban Bannon. And, of course, we know that Trump doesn’t care what we think and probably enjoys the outrage. That is not a reason to be silent. It is also emotionally healthy to know when your influence is really about helping others to be outraged and the reasons why versus getting a new outcome.

What can we do? The Senate confirms the following, thus far announced Cabinet posts:
Secretary of the Treasury – Steve Mnuchin
Secretary of Defense – Gen. James Mattis (Ret.)
Attorney General – Sen. Jeff Sessions
Secretary of Commerce – Wilbur Ross
Secretary of Health and Human Services – Rep. Tom Price
Secretary of Transportation – Elaine Chao
Secretary of Education – Betsy DeVos
Ambassador to the United Nations – Gov. Nikki Haley
Centers For Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator – Seema Verma
Central Intelligence Agency Director – Rep. Mike Pompeo

Due to the Democrats frustration, with the Republicans holding all of President Obama’s choices hostage, the 60 votes needed to confirm was replaced with a simple majority three years ago. Democrats will hold 48 seats in the Senate. For any Cabinet pick to be voted down in the Senate, we will need 3 Republican Senators to vote no.

That is depressing I know. And, we can throw up our hands and say well it won’t happen and we are doomed.
Or, we can target some of the worst ones and start calling our Republican Senators and lodging our displeasure in these choices. We need to state why we are displeased and that if they vote yes we will be at their doorstep hounding them for every one of the thousand small and large cuts these folks make against the fabric of basic decency, equality, and justice.

Politicians care about votes. The more they feel that they will not get the votes the next time around the more they will listen. Let your politicians know, weekly, that you are aware of their record and that if they are supporting radicals that you will be working very hard at a local level to have them voted out.

How do you do that? Every time you hear someone complain, give them the online link to find and call their representatives. We have lost our ability to understand the power of our vote as evidenced in the 41.6% of Americans who did not vote. The percentage of non-voters at the mid-terms jumps to approx. 60%. This type of voter turnout shows a complete disconnect in understanding how our government works by a majority of our country.

You can help educate people. You can let them know that we have the power to speak directly to politicians that make and vote on bills that directly affect our lives. You can coach others through calling their legislators. You can coach others to get registered and vote. You can coach others in understanding the system and that being quiet allows someone else to make the decisions, for good or for bad.

Let your Republican legislator know that their choice to go on record supporting radicals will cause you to step up your efforts to turn them out of office. Then follow that up with more action in your conversations with others. Follow up with getting involved in voter registration. Educate people on how government works instead of just listening to folks complain.

We can have a whole new Congress. Commit to regularly telling your legislators why we will be turning them out of office. Support and help others to do so as well. Send Thank You Notes to those in Congress that are doing a good job and support them locally.

Weekly Call to ACTION! – Nov. 26, 2016

What to do about Standing Rock.

The following request for help is being shared on Social Media. Americans are asking for our help and have been. Unfortunately, it is getting worse and not better, and we need to help amplify their voices:

‘The Standing Rock Medic and Healer Council released this statement: “The physicians and tribal healers with the Standing Rock Medic and Healer Council call for the immediate cessation of use of water cannons on people who are outdoors in 28F ambient weather with no means of active rewarming in these conditions. As medical professionals, we are concerned about the real risk of loss of life due to severe hypothermia under these conditions.”
Not to mention continuous mass tear gas, rubber bullets, as well as stinger grenades and LRAND (Long Range Acoustic Device) for 3 hours
Law enforcement also shot down three media drones and targeted journalists with less lethal rounds.
National Lawyers Guild legal observers on the frontlines have confirmed that multiple people were unconscious and bleeding after being shot in the head with rubber bullets. One elder went into cardiac arrest at the frontlines, but medics administered CPR and were able to resuscitate him. The camp’s medical staff and facilities are overwhelmed, and the local community of Cannonball has opened their school gymnasium for emergency relief.

PLEASE CALL THE FOLLOWING AGENCIES NOW:
ND Office of the Governor: 701-328-2200.
Morton County Sheriff’s Department:

Call often, please.’

You can also donate to Standing Rock Medic + Healer Council. With the increase in violence, there is an increase in the medical help needed.

Our Veterans are answering their service pledge and call to duty by showing up to stand as a peaceful militia and shield for the water protectors. They too could use our support.

Personally, I believe we need to be contacting our Legislators regarding this issue as well. While we have been focused on the elections and the Orange Grabenfuhrer and his administration choices, Standing Rock has been under siege.

I’ve heard the dismissive argument that pipelines don’t break. Since repeating this lie often does not make it a reality, maybe we can help our legislators find the facts and truth again. Due to the enormous amounts of mistruths that I’ve heard from our legislators I thought it would be a good plan to forward to them some of the real facts and news that can be found by doing basic research. Of course, we understand that they are too busy blocking all legislation and planning on how to spend their many days off so we can assist by snail mailing, emailing and calling them to remind them of these facts.

For this weeks call to action here are some stories and facts: (You can also find more curated articles to support the Weekly Call to Action at: http://paper.li/e-1480088005.

Distraction Politics

While involved in a local group centered on holding elected officials accountable I learned about being very aware of how politicians and those in power easily and often distract their constituents. If the distractor wants to keep the conversation off of something they don’t want to talk about or that they do not agree with you over, they will divert the conversation to another topic that is an emotional tug.

Here is something in which Trump is exceptionally good at – Distraction. We see this play out over and over again in a very practiced and mastered way. The money-centric media has played thoroughly into furthering and amplifying the voice of the distractor and shows no sign of restraint or letting up on this.

Dealing with this unrelenting distraction is like dealing with a group of teens taking your talking points and running off with them into many, for them, related topics. After letting them run off on tangents, you realize that you are quickly so far off topic that all you can do to bring them back is to sound like the authoritarian (and boring) adult.
That’s it. We have to acknowledge the tangent and be the adult and bring the conversation back.

Hamilton this week was a beautiful distraction. Beautiful in that it tugged directly at our emotions. Yes, it is wrong for the President-Elect to be behaving in this Twitter rant storm like a child. And, this is happening right when Trump was being called out for 1) doing what he said he would never do and 2) we saw how he made his fraudulent behavior (Trump University) disappear with a wave of his monied hand, the Hamilton distraction removed this Trump embarrassment from our national discourse.

Trump is a master at being the class clown and engaging the media in his antics. The real work of reporting on the actual news continues to diminish. The media is interested in ratings, and we have encouraged them by giving ratings to the antics and not the stories that show the Emporer indeed has no clothes.

So what do we do about this? We, individuals who believe in speaking truth to power, can do the following when we sense Distraction Politics:
1. Figure out which news story is the Distraction covering up.
2. Pick an article about that story and save the link.
3. Every Facebook and Twitter post can be responded to by saying ‘Wow! And we are being distracted away from this other very important story – Link to story.’
4. Contact Media and call them out. We are not interested in distraction politics or reporting. We want real news. We want real journalism.

Email the Electors

You can email the Electors of the Electoral College and ask them to do the job for which the Electoral College was actually created.

From: http://www.historycentral.com/elections/Electoralcollgewhy.html

“The founding fathers were afraid of direct election to the Presidency. They feared a tyrant could manipulate public opinion and come to power…..Hamilton and the other founders believed that the electors would be able to insure that only a qualified person becomes President. They believed that with the Electoral College no one would be able to manipulate the citizenry. It would act as check on an electorate that might be duped. Hamilton and the other founders did not trust the population to make the right choice. The founders also believed that the Electoral College had the advantage of being a group that met only once and thus could not be manipulated over time by foreign governments or others.”

You can speak to the Electors  by Clicking Here.

The letter I sent, may be a bit over the top…..

Dear Elector,

My understanding of the electoral college was that you are to prevent a crazy person from hurting our country. I’m afraid you need to do so now. Trump has proven to hate nearly everyone. He has proven he has zero respect for the highest office of our country. He has proven that he will not heed any advice from anyone but his own mind. He has proven that he will surround himself with those in our society that we have previously sidelined as Racist, Misogynistic, Xenophobic, Anti-everything but white male. He is already meeting with foreign leaders without counsel from the Pentagon, the Military or anyone else that has a clue about what is really going on in the world. He is being played like a toy by Russia.

This is the disaster that our forefathers warned of.  Please take notice and do something radical to prevent the US from becoming one of the following:
Bombed by saner nations off the face of the earth.
Taken over and becoming a satellite of the Russian empire.
Placing all non-white, cis-gender, straight persons in prisons, concentration camps, or electro-shock therapies.
Please read History. Please read about the rise of other Dictators. Please be thinking individuals who love your Country above all else.

Thank you for your time and consideration, I appreciate and respect the role you serve in our electoral process.

Sincerely,

WEEKLY CALL-TO-ACTION: Find Your Elected Officials: Click Here

Call your Senator/Rep, Senate Leadership, and House Leadership with this script or similar RE: Trump’s cabinet picks. If you want to call about each one separately or combine them into a letter you can do that as well. (do a google news search for your Rep/Senator’s name and “Sessions/Bannon/Kobach/Flynn”.)

Senators:
“Hi, my name is ….., and I’m a constituent. I am calling to ask that Sen _____ publicly denounce and vote against the following cabinet choices because of their public and harmful overt racism and who is/are supported by the White Supremacist and Hate groups of this country. Ours is a country that needs to bring people together not choose leaders that will divide and harm Americans. Sen ___ needs to step up and protect American values now.

Representatives:
“Hi, my name is ….., and I’m a constituent. I am calling to ask that Representative _____ publicly denounce the following cabinet choices because of their very public and harmful overt racism and who is/are supported by the White Supremacist and Hate groups of this country. Ours is a country that needs to bring people together not choose leaders that will divide and harm Americans. Representative ___ needs to step up and protect American values now.

For those who have already spoken out against one or all of the following:
“Hi, my name is …. And I’m a constituent calling to thank Rep/Sen_____ for condemning (Insert Name)’s racism. I ask that the Senator/Representative continue to pressure the Trump transition team and withhold Votes and Support if they appoint racists. Rep/Sen ____ needs to continue to protect American values.

Senator Jeff Sessions has a long history of bigoted comments towards people of color and civil rights organizations, including the NAACP and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In 1984 Sen. Sessions tried to prosecute three Alabama civil rights workers for their voter registration work. This politically motivated case not only failed but also led to Congress rejecting him as unfit for judicial office. It is an outrage for Sessions to oversee the civil rights division of the Department of Justice.

Steve Bannon, formerly led the far-right website Breitbart News, which has ceaselessly promoted racist, sexist, anti-Semitic and homophobic rhetoric that degrades the human dignity of millions of Americans.

Kris Kobach, a member of Mr. Trump’s transition team, has a horrifying record on civil rights and has advanced policies that disenfranchise people of color and discriminate against immigrants, and has called for a registry that would single out Muslims and other religious minorities.

Having worked alongside our armed forces in dangerous environs, I respect Michael Flynn’s military service. But he has called Islam “a Cancer” and used social media to stoke fears of Jews and Muslims. National security experts know that such divisive fear-fueled rhetoric only leads to senseless hate crimes here in America, and needlessly puts at risk our men and women in uniform.
